When I was growing up, my grandmother was a wedding planner. She co-owned a business with her sister-in-law. My mother would help decorate and serve at larger weddings that required more hands on deck. I would always tag along, playing in my younger days, exploring the wedding and reception locations. My favorite place was the Lee Council House, and I would later have my own wedding reception there. As I grew older, I helped more and more on those Saturdays.
My grandmother had a red toolbox that traveled to every wedding with her. Any time she needed me to get her something, she would say “look in my red toolbox.” My memories of listening as she met with brides, planned details and designed floral arrangements have stuck with me over the years.
As an event planner, I channel the skills I learned from my grandmother: the importance of details, listening to the clients, being prepared. But I try as well to reflect her grace, patience, and ability to make everyone feel special. I bring it all along to my events…with my own red toolbox.
